Gotta catch ’em all: the Rainbow Edition

Posted in Miscellanea, Mounts and pets with tags , , on December 19, 2012 by Aeliel

Happy almost-Christmas! Here, have a resolution to post more for the future. Maybe it’ll stick this time.

As usual, I’ve spent lots of time playing the game and not nearly enough talking about it. Let’s try and fix that, shall we?

So I’ve been mostly raiding, and believe you me I have things to say about raiding, not all of them polite, so let’s leave those for another post.

Let’s talk about pet battles instead!

Pet battles, it seems, are one of those things you either love, or absolutely don’t get the point of. Half my guild is all “oooh, a blue squirrel!”, the other half is “uh, okay?”. I’m firmly in the “oooh, a blue squirrel” camp (although having had a blue squirrel for-bloody-ever, I’m more along the lines of “oooh, a blue Infinite Whelpling off the first one I ever saw! and a breed that doesn’t suck either!”).

Before 5.1, I did my pet battle dailies religiously, and yet had no Porcupette to show for them. After 5.1 dropped, I decided I would just buy a damned Porcupette, so I wouldn’t sadface every time I opened a daily bag and no cute porcupine inside. I half-expected it to drop out of the first daily bag after I bought it, but so far it hasn’t.

Then I went on to clear up the remaining Pandaria tamers and unlock the Spirit Tamers. Picked the Earth Spirit as a quest reward because hell no I’m not redoing that fight ever if I can help it, got the Air Spirit out of the very first time I did the daily (good, because I was torn between picking that and Earth, not because Air was hard but because Air looked lonely… guess she really wanted to come home with me), got the Water Spirit the very next day, still haven’t got the Fire Spirit but oh well. (Though since Water is such a push-over of a fight, I’ve been using him to level pets on, and I’ve gotten two more copies of the pet.)

Once I had everything unlocked, I resumed going zone by zone and catching all the wild pets. It was in Valley of the Four Winds, as I stubbornly tried to find a bandicoon of the color I liked the best, that it occurred to me that I should check what wild pets came in what colors, so if at all possible I could have a full collection.

And because I’m nothing if not helpful (or rather, because I’m going to be spending the next several months in “argh, it’s blue and a good breed but the wrong damned color” hell and pain shared is pain halved), here’s the results of my checking. I know Quintessence has been doing color challenges and I probably could’ve just used the data from her posts, but I’m stubborn.

All information gleaned from WarcraftPets. If their info is wrong, mine will be as well. Corrections will be gratefully accepted. If there are no color changers involved with a particular model and no quirks to the pets, I’m not bothering to list it (owls, for example).

Four colors. Three of the four are available on stable pets, but the fourth can only be found on color changers. Most of these are aquatic – I’ll mark the outliers. All are wild pets unless stated otherwise.

Blue: Emperor Crab. The Spirit Crab (undead) is a unique version of this color, ghostly and semi-transparent with a blue glow.

Red: Strand Crawler (fishing dailies), Spirebound Crab, Lava Crab (elemental).

White / Grey: Shore Crawler (Goblin-only). If you don’t have a Goblin character and don’t feel like dragging one out of the starter zone just for the pet, both of the wild color changers listed for the last color also come in this one.

Beige / Teal: Shore Crab, Strand Crab. Both of these are color changers and come in all four crab colors.

As for what I’ve been up to…

Posted in Achievements, Alts, Miscellanea, Mounts and pets, Professions with tags , , , , on October 2, 2012 by Aeliel

…beyond leveling and gearing, that is…

(464 equipped ilvl and climbing, with stupid green ilvl437 pants and two crafted ilvl450 rings because mine just won’t drop ARGH and the newly rep-requirement-less JP gear doesn’t include tanking pants for some dumb reason.)

Behold the reason I’ve been living in dungeons since I hit 90 (which was on day 1)…

I was the last of our group to get it, because the last achievement I needed was Hydrophobia – which is individual, not group – and I am a baddie bad who stands in the bad, apparently. (And while I know I could’ve just stood outside the door and let the others pull and kill the boss without me – I refuse to take the easy way out for anything.)

Now if I could actually ride the bloody mount, I’d be even happier. But no, it requires Cloud Serpent Riding, and the eggs to grind that rep are as rare as hen’s teeth so I’m stuck doing dailies.

And here’s the reason I was grinding professions on alts (and being stubborn about engineering on my hunter)…

Not as shiny as a realm first achievement by any means, but I’m still pretty proud.

One more day to go before raids open. Wonder if I’ll get the last heroic blues I’m missing to drop before then…

So… many… eggs…

A few hours of running around in circles picking up eggs netted me the ugliest tallstrider mount yet. I generally like tallstrider mounts, but come on – this one looks like a White Hawkstrider that got its feathers plucked out and is singularly unhappy about it. Ahh well.

I did my egg collecting in Falconwing Square, because I know the spawn spots there by heart (since I’ve always done the event there). “Hilariously skewed” doesn’t even begin to describe my server’s population, so there was little competition, and even if I had to take frequent breaks to slaughter a guard or five, it was still more efficient than competing with three hundred other people in Goldshire.

Since I had enough bag space to do the egg collecting in one go, I made a list of everything I got to drop from the eggs  that wasn’t chocolates before I destroyed the BoP items (with the exception of Blossoming Branches… there are a lot of bunnies in my guild’s future :D) and sent the rest to a bank alt. It seems I’m not the first person to have this idea, but hey.

Blossoming Branch
4 Spring Robes
4 Black Tuxedo Pants
3 Spring Circlet
3 Spring Rabbit’s Foot
3 White Tuxedo Shirt
1 Elegant Dress

The two new colors for the Spring Circlet (black and pink) don’t seem to drop from eggs at all, although 500 eggs is a fairly small sample size (I’ve seen it mentioned on Wowhead that the mount can also drop from eggs, although that didn’t happen to me – as I got closer and closer to 500 chocolates, I was half-expecting it to drop when I got to 490 chocolates or so, just for the RNG gods to have a good laugh at my expense), so who knows. I might go farm 100 eggs on my bank alt just to get the spare circlets… but if I do, it’ll be near the tail end of the holiday. Right now I’m a bit sick of running around in circles.

As usual…

Posted in Miscellanea with tags , , , on July 23, 2011 by Aeliel

…too busy actually playing to post about it. I keep meaning to update my best Cataclysm dailies for gold post with the new Hyjal dailies, but every time I go do the dailies I forget to note down the gold rewards. It doesn’t help that I’ve been sick and, as a result, very fuzzy-brained. Blargh.

On the upside…

I’m done with the challenge tames! (Until my little hunter hits 85 – she’s 81 right now – and then I get to chase down Anthriss, Ankha, Karkin and Kirix. Yay?)

Of course, I still haven’t managed to name most of them. The only two that got named so far are Skarr (Maladath, after this item, because I’ve always liked the sound of the name and it seemed to fit) and Ban’thalos (Spirit – the same name as my Loque’nahak, who got abandoned to free up a slot for him; I have Loque on my little hunter as well and I try not to duplicate pets). I haven’t been this indecisive over a pet’s name, let alone four pets’ names, in a very long while.

Story of each individual tame in the extended entry, for those who care. Some of them involve ganking. (PVP servers are such fun, right?)

A picture is worth a thousand words

Posted in Mounts and pets with tags , on June 5, 2011 by Aeliel

So I’ve not been posting – again – this time largely due to the fact that I’m not playing on my own computer, since it’s currently out of commission being fixed. So I’ve not been playing nearly as much, and I don’t have all my programs and such to make screenshots pretty and the like… but this is worth posting, because yay. It’s really multiple pictures to get my point across, not just the one (so I guess it’s me being wordy as usual), but here goes:

I hadn’t even been camping for very long – one day and change all considered, really. And here’s how lucky I was…

Note me going automatically AFK after the alert popped. I got distracted by the boyfriend and therefore took my headphones off to talk to him… without tabbing into the window where I was camping… and therefore missed the alert. When I tabbed back in, I clicked the NPCScan alert window to target and nothing happened. I panicked and thought I’d missed him.

Turns out it was just that he was in a spawn point far away enough from my position that I couldn’t target him that far. I found him, still untagged, peacefully flying in circles (and I could swear smirking smugly at my panicking self) at one of the south spawn points. From the time he spawned to when I actually managed to mount him, three full minutes passed, and this on a Saturday afternoon, with plenty of people in Deepholm. I still can’t believe nobody else was standing close enough to see him.

This comes on the heels of getting both Aeonaxx and the Time-Lost Proto-Drake for the boyfriend last week, both within a couple of days. (And then I got eaten by Minecraft and didn’t play at all for a week, despite resolving to begin camping the mounts for myself immediately. Damn but that game is addictive.) Next project, getting a Time-Lost Proto-Drake for myself… we’ll see how long that takes.

PS. Credit where credit is due, and in case you’re interested in camping the mounts for yourself: and are excellent resources, one for each mount, both run by the same guy, with up-to-date and very accurate information. There’s also information on Poseidus and the Mysterious Camel Figurines if you look thoroughly (in the forums, for instance).

After weeks of circling…

Posted in Alts, Hunter, Miscellanea, Mounts and pets with tags , , , on January 10, 2011 by Aeliel

Refraining from squeeing out loud and waking up everybody else in the house is damn hard, lemme tell you.

I circled last night. Circle, circle, circle, circle… fall asleep in chair… AWOOOOOOOOGAbwuh-? Oh, it’s just somebody who pulled Sambas out underneath me. (Hadn’t pulled out mine or visited the stables since the last time I cleared cache, so I didn’t have him cached.) What the hell, I’m exhausted, let’s just go to sleep.

Wake up at 8:30am, can’t get back to sleep. What the hell, body, I went to sleep at 2am, surely I need more sleep than that. Toss in bed for a while trying to fall back asleep, can’t, finally decide to get up. Between one thing and the other I get to the computer around 8:45am. Decide to reboot so I don’t have any issues running two copies of the game to drag my second hunter through Deadmines to find the rare parrot I’m missing.

Reboot. Launch the game. I really should log my main first and do dailies. Nah, let’s log my hunter and see if Karoma’s up. Loading screen… disconnected from server. Relog. By now it’s 9am, a /who shows 49+ people in Twilight Highlands. Surely Karoma won’t be up… ah, what the hell, I’ll do some circles and then go do dailies on my main, just in case.

I’d logged out over what I think of the “middle” spawnpoint (the one almost directly south of Firebeard’s Patrol). So I decide to fly east first, then circle around.

Get to the spawnpoint by the shredders – the one where I’d ended up staring at Karoma’s dead body three times – AWOOOOOOOOOGAH!

Nearly shriek and jump out of chair, frantically click the NPCScan button, expecting to see her dead again. No… no she’s alive… right under me… untapped… not a soul around.

*happy dance*

Land, jump off mount, forget to tag (if there’d been anybody else around I would’ve been soooo screwed), frantically press Tame Beast. (I did, though, have the presence of mind to take a screenshot mid-tame.) Ten seconds later, she finally was mine.

Now I can go do something else without worrying that I’ll miss a spawn.

Happy New Year!

Yeah, I kinda dropped off the radar for a bit there. My bad. (That said, Alieth still hasn’t posted a second time, so I’m still good.)

I’m now pretty decently geared on my main. I finally got the damn trinket and a decent relic, although I’m still using a 333 weapon (but I don’t have threat issues for the moment, so /careface). And I’m only missing Vigorous VanCleef Vindicator for the heroic drake. I also capped both Enchanting and Leatherworking: the latter was amazingly painful (even with farming leather on my hunter), while the 525-skill patterns for the former strike me as designed by somebody who didn’t get the memo that heroic instances don’t drop epics anymore. But meh.

I also hit 85 on my hunter and got decently geared pretty quickly. I’ve mostly completed my hunter pet wishlist (although it changed a fair bit in the process – I’ll probably make a post with screenshots of my final pet line up once I’m done with the last tame), with the exception of Karoma, who’s the last tamable Cataclysm rare I’m missing that I actually want.

I’ve been spending the vast majority of my free time in Twilight Highlands for more than a week now, circling the spawn points.

I haven’t even seen another hunter with her tamed yet (unlike Sambas, Terrorpene and Ghostcrawler).

I found her dead three times. Once, after doubling back to hit a spawn point where I had just been. And finding her dead does me very little good, because even if I set my alarm clock for 6 hours later and do nothing but circle, eventually I have to, you know, go do something else. And the next time I see her she’s dead again.

Why yes, it’s getting insanely frustrating. And by now it’s a matter of principle, even if I never use her again after I tame her (which is unlikely, since I rotate which pets I take with me to instances and whatnot). Aaaaaargh. I wish she was like Ghostcrawler, non-aggressive, slightly better hidden and very deadly.
