Items that get you somewhere

Somewhat inspired by Gavendo’s post about on-use items, I thought I would make a list about transportation items… items that will get you somewhere else from where you currently are, much like the common Hearthstone – just, well, less common.

Home is where the hearthstone is

These items will send you to whatever location your normal hearthstone is set.

Ruby Slippers

  • From: Karazhan, Opera event. You have to random onto the Oz one and you only get one shot a week. On the plus side, it’s probably the easiest Opera event to solo (Romulo and Julianne is a pain if you have no interrupt, and Big Bad Wolf is painful if you’re squishy).
  • Cooldown: 30 minutes. Unfortunately, it is shared with your normal hearthstone – whichever of the two you use, the other one will go on cooldown as well.

The Innkeeper’s Daughter

  • From: Archaeology – it’s a Rare Dwarf item, requiring 150 Dwarf Archaeology fragments.
  • Cooldown: 30 minutes. I haven’t leveled Archaeology in beta, so I have no idea if the cooldown is shared with the normal hearthstone – if it is, this item is more or less pointless; if it isn’t, it will be quite convenient to track down

Scroll of Recall (one-use consumable)

  • From: Inscription. There are three versions of this: the first one has no level requirement but unpredictable results beyond level 40, the second requires level 35 and is unpredictable beyond level 70, and the third requires level 65 and always works. Skill level requirement varies (25, 200 and 350 respectively).
  • Cooldown: 20 minutes, independent from the normal hearthstone.

Dalaran, the place I long to be

These items will send you to Dalaran. Useful if you still want to do the dailies from there, or if you’re looking to save yourself time getting to Uldum in Cataclysm (teleporting to Dalaran and taking the portal to Caverns of Time is much faster than flying it).

Ring of the Kirin Tor (any)

  • From: Harold Winston, in Dalaran.
  • Price: 6800g at its cheapest (when you buy the basic ring and you are Exalted with the Kirin Tor). If your reputation is lower, the price will go up. If you want a ring with higher item level and stats (the basic ones are ilvl200, while the best are ilvl251), be prepared to spend much, much more – although there is no reason you should, considering you will replace it quite quickly and therefore its only value lies in the Dalaran teleport.
  • Cooldown: 30 minutes, shared with all rings of the same type (so even if you’re filthy rich and can buy multiple rings, you still can only teleport every half hour).
  • There are four different varieties of this ring – one for healers, one for caster DPS, one for agility-based melee DPS and one for strength-based melee DPS. (Annoyingly, there is no tanking ring – although since 4.0.1 tanks can just pick up the strength or the agility one depending on their class.)
  • Purchasing a ring is also worth 10 achievement points.

Jaina’s Locket

  • From: Icecrown Citadel – it’s one of the rewards from the Sealed Chest a player can loot the first time they kill the Lich King in 25-man ICC after completing their Shadowmourne. It’s not Bind on Pickup, so your best bet is probably the Auction House.
  • Price: I’ve seen it go for as high as 30k and as low as 5k. It widely varies from server to server, and might go up in Cataclysm as players stop creating Shadowmourne.
  • Cooldown: 1 hour.
  • This item opens a portal that your entire group or raid can use, rather than teleporting just you.

Your faction leader called, he wants you to come home

These items will get you to Orgrimmar or Stormwind, depending on your faction.

Guild achievement cloaks

  • From: three different guild achievements – A Class Act, Guild Level 15 and Master Crafter.
  • Price: 150g for the green cloak, 300g for the blue one and 500g for the epic one.
  • Cooldown: 8 hours for the green cloak, 4 hours for the blue one and 2 hours for the epic one.

The world is my oyster

Direbrew’s Remote

  • From: Brewfest. It’s a random drop from your daily reward bag for pounding Coren Direbrew into the ground.
  • Cooldown: 1 hour.
  • Where it gets you: Blackrock Depths, the bar.
  • This item is vastly more useful than you would think. Getting anywhere in Blackrock Mountain is much faster if you take the teleporter to BRD then walk out of the instance – especially now that they added a permanent mole machine that gets you back to the entrance pretty much right outside the bar door. I used this extensively while working on the Dungeon Set 2 quest chain. (“Go fetch something from very far, now come back to me outside BRS, now go fetch something else, now come back, now go away, now come back” aaaaaaaugh!)

Argent Crusader’s Tabard

  • From: Dame Evniki Capsalis, the Crusader quartermaster at the Argent Tournament. You need to be Exalted Champion of the Alliance or Horde before she’ll sell anything to you.
  • Price: 50 Champion’s Seals. You get these from doing dailies (if you can access the vendor, you most likely have all Seal-granting dailies available to you) and running Heroic Trial of the Champion.
  • Cooldown: 30 minutes.
  • Where it gets you: to the Argent Tournament, in Icecrown.
  • If you’re looking to turn in 25 dailies at the stroke of midnight during Cataclysm launch to give you a boost on the path to 85, this item will be quite useful, as the Argent Tournament has what is probably the largest concentration of usable dailies and is quite near to the Shadow Vault, another daily hub. Otherwise, your Champion’s Seals are probably better spent on mounts, pets and, perhaps, an Argent Pony Bridle, for the non-engineers among us.

Blessed Medallion of Karabor

  • From: the Black Temple attunement quest chain. You can have a look at the Wowhead comments on this quest for a decent idea of what you have to do. You have to kill Illidan to get the medallion, incidentally.
  • Price: your time and sanity.
  • Cooldown: 15 minutes.
  • Where it gets you: Shadowmoon Valley, at the entrance to Black Temple.
  • This is my “I need to get to Outlands” travel staple for when I’m in the middle of nowhere. It also plonks you right at the spawn place for Doomwalker, if you’re interested in giving the good ol’ loot pinata a poke – it’s a quick way of checking if the boss is up.

Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian

  • From: the level 60 version of Naxxramas.
  • Cooldown: 1 minute.
  • Where it gets you: outside of Karazhan, in Deadwind Pass.
  • This item opens a portal that your entire group or raid can use, rather than teleporting just you.
  • Very, very few people who still play the game have this thing. You can’t get this anymore – I’m just including it for completion’s sake – and even before they removed the old Naxxramas with the Wrath launch, you had to be a caster class (mage, warlock, druid or priest) and run Naxxramas long enough to pry 40 Splinters of Atiesh from the cruel hands of RNG.

Wormhole Generator: Northrend

  • From: Engineering. You need Engineering 435 to learn how to make this, but only 415 to use it; it’s Bind on Use.
  • Price: varies, depending on whether you craft this yourself or buy it already made and depending on your server’s prices.
  • Cooldown: 4 hours.
  • Where it gets you: Borean Tundra, Howling Fjord, Sholazar Basin, Icecrown or Storm Peaks.
  • Convenient to use to move to various locations in Northrend, despite the long cooldown.
  • The Storm Peaks option drops you right outside of Ulduar.
  • Occasionally a sixth option will open up, leading to the Dalaran Underground, where a NPC will sell you some Engineering schematics. These can be resold for a sizable profit.

Ultrasafe Transporter: Gadgetzan

  • From: Engineering. Requires a skill of 260 and the Gnomish specialization.
  • Price: varies, depending on whether you craft this yourself or buy it already made and depending on your server’s prices.
  • Cooldown: 4 hours.
  • Where it gets you: Gadgetzan.
  • You might want to keep a parachute cloak or other means of slowing down your fall at the ready. (See this comic.)
  • Another quick method of getting to Uldum in Cataclysm, as well as convenient access to the neutral Auction House. Some vendors in Gadgetzan might also sell rare patterns (I’m unsure of this since the Shattering).

Ultrasafe Transporter: Toshley’s Station

  • From: Engineering. Requires a skill of 350 and the Gnomish specialization.
  • Price: varies, depending on whether you craft this yourself or buy it already made and depending on your server’s prices.
  • Cooldown: 4 hours.
  • Where it gets you: Toshley’s Station, in Blade’s Edge.
  • No deadly malfunctions on this one.

Dimensional Ripper: Everlook

  • From: Engineering. Requires a skill of 260 and the Goblin specialization.
  • Price: varies, depending on whether you craft this yourself or buy it already made and depending on your server’s prices.
  • Cooldown: 4 hours.
  • Where it gets you: Everlook.
  • You might get set on fire using this, but it most likely won’t kill you.
  • Convenient access to the neutral Auction House. Some vendors in Everlook might also sell rare-stock patterns (I’m unsure of this since the Shattering).

Dimensional Ripper: Area 52

  • From: Engineering. Requires a skill of 350 and the Goblin specialization.
  • Price: varies, depending on whether you craft this yourself or buy it already made and depending on your server’s prices.
  • Cooldown: 4 hours.
  • Where it gets you: Area 52, in Netherstorm.
  • No deadly malfunctions on this one.
  • Provides quick access to this vendor, who sells several Engineering items that may be resold for profit. Also places you quite close to the Stormspire and its pet vendor.

One Response to “Items that get you somewhere”

  1. Very nice list! I’m definitely gonna have to save this somewhere for reference. :)

I counted my own items and I have 7 of these items myself and the only ones left that I could actually get would be the Ruby Slippers and Jaina’s Locket. I don’t think I feel the need to replace my hearthstone with those boots though and that locket is waaay pricey.

    Cheers,
    Gav
