At the long bloody last

This achievement took entirely too long, or at least it felt like it. It only took me about 7000 casts or so (if I am to believe the “Fish and other things caught” statistic, although not all of those were in zones that could’ve gotten me a rare fish), and I know there are people who’ve spent vastly longer fishing and still don’t have it – but it felt like it was taunting me.

I won the Kalu’ak fishing competition while trying to get this achievement. My reasoning was “I’ll just fish in Howling Fjord, I’m not likely to win the competition but I might actually catch the stupid Dark Herring. No joy, but I did end up fishing up a Blacktip Shark on the fourth or fifth catch of the third competition I tried.

(Meanwhile, Alieth went fishing in Howling Fjord for a lark at the same time I was doing it while we were both waiting on a raid to fill, and he got a Sea Turtle off the second pool he emptied, the lucky git. I still don’t have mine, but meh.)

And then, of course, there was the time I went to help Alieth with the Stranglethorn Vale fishing competition. I was pretend-fishing in the pools he was fishing to discourage competition… and he caught a Rockhide Strongfish before the competition was over. (He didn’t win the competition, unfortunately – he was on 34 fish when the winner was announced – but he’ll keep trying and I’ll keep helping.)

In the end, I got my Dark Herring in Howling Fjord a few days ago, when I went to fish out of boredom and frustration with having missed a certain achievement due to the utter stupidity of a raid member (I’ll get into that in a future post). It was a bit anticlimatic, truth be told, but a relief at the same time – I don’t have to fish another Fangtooth Herring School ever again. Hooray.

Now to get a Sea Turtle, right? I’m kind of hoping they’ll make that one fishable from Cataclysm-level pools as well, although I’m not holding my breath.
